Jail Island, Alcatraz

A visitor drives in San Francisco city. He drives from Union Square area heading north toward Fisherman's Wharf, taking Leavenworth Street. Around the place where Leavenworth comes across Lombard Street on the top of the hill, the road starts to be downhill. In front of his windshield, lower part of his eyesight, he is now viewing northern part of San Francisco Bay. He will see an island, shaped like a huge battleship, with sharp and steep side, standing straight from the ocean surface.

He is watching Alcatraz Island, "Jail Island" in San Francisco Bay.

Many have known the name "Alcatraz" from movies and. It is world-famous Jail Island. The island had an unusual shape as mentioned. The both edges of the island are not slope. They are sharp and steep cliff. It also looked like a huge ship. It gives a viewer an impression immediately that it is an immense "Battleship". Other than its unusual shape, with bright California sun, it did not look like a jail at all.

In addition, the island looked too close to the Fisherman's Wharf to be "an inescapable island jail". If one is a swimmer who can swim 2-3 miles, he might think he could swim to the island.

Alcatraz Island is located on the northern part of San Francisco Bay, between Fisherman's Wharf and Marine County. It is so close to Fisherman's Wharf that almost everybody wonder if it is the infamous prison island, which people called inescapable. A good swimmer would be able to swim the distance, if prepared to the temperature of the water with diving suits and guarded by an emergency rescue boat,. It was a couple of years ago, 6 years old boy could swim from Alcatraz to Fisherman's Wharf.

Then, why is this jail island is inescapable? Talking with some people, there are several different answers. Water is too cold to keep swimming the distance without body temperature protection. San Francisco Bay looks calm in the surface. There is violent tide deep in the ocean. It changes directions so often. No swimmer can be free from the influence of this violent tide. Swimming at night is almost killing oneself. Man-eating sharks are active especially at night. Many of these may be true. These all factors are working together to prevent prisoners to escape from Alcatraz.

There was no one who escaped from Alcatraz alive during its history served as a jail island in official records.

Ferries to Alcatraz depart from pier 33. If one stays in San Francisco and hope to visit Alcatraz, he should select weekday and make reservation 3-5 days before he schedules to visit. Weekends' tickets are usually sold out for next 2-3 weeks. In the ferry boarding area, there are exhibitions of notorious criminals jailed in Alcatraz, including Al Capone.

Travel time in Alcatraz Island Ferry to Alcatraz is incredibly short. It does not take more than 15 minutes to reach the island. Even there is no enough time to enjoy views of San Francisco city area or Golden Gate Bridge, despite the fact that there is a magnificent view over them, since it is the best boat trip to view over San Francisco city, Marine County, and East Bay.

We can freely explore Alcatraz now since the federal government closed the jail, and it is now a part of Golden Gate National Park. For the criminals sent to Alcatraz, it meant "Death Sentence" for them. In the Ferry Boarding Area, just next to Al Capone picture, a picture of wall graffiti of unknown prisoner says "You will be sent to jail if you break the law. If you break a rule in jail, you will be sent to Alcatraz". One can feel hearing a prisoner sobbing in his jail cell. My Japanese friend commented to my Blog post one time. "It is exciting to take a look into infamous jail island without committing a crime". Simple crime is not enough to be sent to Alcatraz. One needs to commit a crime of Al Capone level to be sent there.

It is a part of Golden Gate National Park, so the rule is "Don't carry in anything, do not carry out anything, other than you throw away garbage and you buy souvenirs." As soon as arriving at the front gate of the jail, visitors will listen to 10 minutes explanation about the history of Alcatraz and visiting rules. Now they must be ready for walking into the jail chamber.

All they have inside of the island is Jail Building. White hospital like looking building is building for jail facility. Other than that, there are some small houses for wardens and wardens' family lived. Stepping into the jail building, visitors will visit the shower place, first. It may be the first place where the prisoners went when sent to Alcatraz. In here, visitors can rent narration unit explaining histories of Alcatraz as they walk through the island. There are translated narration unit is available for Japanese, Chinese, and many European languages.

Now let's walk into the center of cell area. There are small cells on both sides of not so wide hallway. They are individual cells for prisoners. They are incredibly small. Cells lined up side-by-side and three stories. The ceiling of each cell is low. It looks like so small that, if one stretch his arms, his both hands touch walls. Animals living environment in zoo looks much better than this. It would not take more than 3 days to make a normal person totally crazy if one continue to live in place like this.

Now visitors stand in front of a black board hung in the higher part of the Dining. It is the menu placed on the top of the dining area entrance overhead. The board was showing breakfast of the day. "Assorted Dry Cereals", "Stewed Whole Wheat", " 1 Scrambled Egg", "2 Milk", "Stewed Fruit", and "Toast". Top of the board showed "21 March 1963". Their breakfast on March 21, 1963 did not look miserable.

There is a window looks like a window of submarine or battle ship at the corner of a hallway. There is some story This is the windows inmates can look out. What they could see was San Francisco city. It is not just through this window, but prisoners could have a clear view of San Francisco city. In festive time, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc, prisoners could watch city dressed up with illuminations, fireworks, and could even hear people partying, singing, dancing, laughing, and enjoying.

It would have been unendurable torture for prisoners who could feel, sense, watch, and hear the people free outside, enjoying themselves in festive occasions. They must have wanted to close their eyes, cover their ears. They could still feel what is happening on the other side of the Bay. How horrible it was. What a cruel torture, human beings could do to the other human beings even they are criminals!.

History shows that there were lots of escape attempts from Alcatraz. Official record indicates "34 Escape Attempts, 7 killed, 2 drowned, 5 missing, and 20 arrested". Included in the missing were "Frank Morris" and Anglin brothers as shown the movie "Escape from Alcatraz". Frank Morris was sent to Alcatraz in 1960. He planned and attempted prison break in 1962 with John Anglin, Clarence Anglin, and Allen West. They built a raft. They made their own dolls. Put them in their beds. They continued to dig to escape for 2 years. They put their plan into an action on June 11, 1962. Allen West was late and could not join the escape.

FBI started search immediately, but they could not find them. They could not find their bodies, as well. All they found were a part of their raft, bags of Anglins, and some other belongings to fugitives. FBI and Alcatraz authority decided that they were drowned and died. Federal government decided to close Alcatraz Prison about 1 year after this escape.

Another important figure in Alcatraz is Warden and Officers in Alcatraz. Show room in Alcatraz displays mannequin of the officer in Alcatraz used to be. They lived in the island with their family. Across the road of the jailhouse building, there are individual house ruin of the wardens and officers. Higher-class officers could live in a separate house. Now, if someone wanted houses like them with a great view to San Francisco city, he might have needed to spend well over 1 million dollars.

Also, their children were attending schools in San Francisco across the bay. They were taking ferries every morning and evening to attend their schools. In comparison with inmates, the officers lives might not have been so miserable. Lives of officers in prisons and jails, however, were not easy. It could be as destructive as prisoners. They need to be tensed days and nights. If something happens, the officers need to fight for their lives. Prisoners are not amiable to them. They must be tough to inmates. The jail island made lives of all related people hard.

Isolated from outside society, this island had their own functions. They had their own fire-fighting unit. There is a fire truck preserved in the island silently telling the days when the island was still the jail.

The summer holidays in New Zealand include celebrating Christmas, New Year's Day and of course the beaches. The New Zealand summer school holidays begin around the 20th of December through to the 31st of January, and you can expect to see hundreds of cars with trailers loaded up on Boxing Day making their way to the coastal areas.

Beach holidays in New Zealand are the ultimate Kiwi summer vacation. There are endless options given the massive stretch of coastal areas that line both the north and south islands. The beach holiday lifestyle is unbeatable, from fishing, swimming and lounging in the sun, to strolling through the streets of Whangamata for example, there is plenty to do. Located in the Coromandel Peninsula, Whangamata is a well frequented beach resort, this small town's population increases substantially over the summer months with many people attending 'Whanga Week' and the 'Summer Festival'. Whangamata Beach is never empty, with morning walkers through to night-time concerts goers, there is much to see. It is advised that you get to the beach early for a good spot, like all the popular beaches throughout New Zealand, they soon fill up with bright beach blankets, sun umbrellas, chilly-bins and the smell of suntan lotion.

A Kiwi summer holiday includes barbecues, ice-creams and jandals! You are guaranteed to find Kiwi families enjoying a barbecue on a mild summer's night at the beach. Most of the beaches in New Zealand provide public barbeque facilities, and the local shops usually have BBQ packs you can buy.

Those who wish to lap up as many of the sunshine hours as they can often head to the Bay of Plenty, Hawkes Bay and Nelson for their summer holidays, where some of the most beautiful beaches can also be found. For enjoying the most you have to make a proper plan so that there is least number of complications. There are several things you can do to ensure that your trip is exciting and interesting rather than becoming a big blunder. Take all necessary precautions and keep all the necessary items with you which will be required in case of emergencies etc. If you are flying abroad you have to be more careful about a lot of things. Given below are a few tips which will help you to make a memorable and hassle free trip.

If you are visiting to a particular country, do collect some information about the place, such as food habits, important places to visit, rules and regulations and other important things etc. This will help you to be prepared for several new things which you would be seeing for the first time. If possible it is also better to read travelogues pertaining to that particular area. Take proper insurance package. It will help you to be covered for hospital treatment and medical evacuation etc which also includes adventure sports too.

The most important aspect is to obey the law. You need to abide by the law of the locality if you are looking for any kind of assistance. Check whether you need visas for the countries you are transiting or visiting. You should be aware that a visa does not guarantee entry. Also remember to carry copies of your insurance policy, passport details, visas, traveler's checks and credit card numbers etc. Have a copy in a different pocket or place and also leave of copy of these at home. Remember to keep the originals safely and separately.

For traveling you should have a healthy body and mind. Many people also seek the help of tour agents who have ready-made tour packages for those who wish to travel alone or in groups. You can also contact such party who will take care of all your requirements and make your journey a breeze.

The World's Best Bars - Soho, Sydney, Australia - Review

If there is one place girls should go at least once when they go clubbing, it's Soho.

For a start, the sheer ratio of guys to girls is a dream: while it's not like walking into a men's locker room, the first moments of walking into Soho feels like walking into a wave of testosterone. Add on the cheap drinks, cheap entry, and an energetic atmosphere, and you have an experience that everyone should try at least once.

I first went into Soho on a Friday night with no expectations, and arrived to a very long queue. Thankfully, the bouncers and the cashiers were very efficient at their job, and I quickly went from the back of the line to the front. As I walked through the entrance and told the girl my name for the guest list however, there was a problem...it turned out that I hadn't been put on it, and I was asked to pay for entry. Long story short, me and my friends left Soho, were called back in, and I was allowed in for free...which was definitely a plus side to my experience.

Walking into Soho is like walking into any other nightclub (excluding the amount of guys), but dancing in Soho is not like dancing in any other nightclub. Soho's DJs ensure that the music is always enough to get the crowd going, and the people that go into Soho are always up for a good time. This means that there will always be a line at the bar, but also it means that the dance floor never gets tired. In the 4 hours that I was at Soho, the dance floor was constantly packed and filled with energetic people, all looking to have a good time and dance.

On the note of hours, however, I must say this: at Soho timing is of the essence. Arrive too early and your first impression will be of an empty nightclub. Anytime before 10pm is a no-go zone, and will make you hate the experience. Also, arriving too late at Soho also isn't as enjoyable as the night is over and you will in all likelihood be refused entry after 1am. Around midnight is the best time to arrive for a few decent hours of dancing, without having to start on an almost empty dance floor.

Aside from the dancing, the people at Soho are generally either one of two types: really fun, or really seedy. A night at Soho can turn out to be a really great night, or a regrettable one, depending on who you choose to spend it with. As long as you enjoy your night out with a few good friends, Soho is an experience that will definitely be remembered as a good night.

A Clubbers Guide To Sydney - The Mean Fiddler - Review

Having grown up at The Mean Fiddler I feel uncomfortably comfortable calling it my second home.

The place has gone through such a dramatic transformation over the last 6 to 7 years it makes for a good script. From a consistent multiple award winning hotel through 2006 and 2007 to being placed on the problem venues list in late 2008 this place has seen it all.

The Mean Fiddler is now the people's hotel, Friday is 18-26 age bracket young crowd, Saturday 27 + for the older age bracket, it simply has it all.

From the 3 bars, The Fiddler Bar the traditional Irish Bar as its been labelled by management where you can commence you night with a few quiet drinks with friends,The Woolshed listening and singing to those iconic tunes belted out by the live band, The third The Drovers Bar caters for the locals and the workers in the arvo who feel a little parched and in typical tradie style they can sit on the verandah in the sun, 3pm, down a cold one TAB facilities arms length away and finish the day off in style, but by mid evening this place is overtaken with the people who are out for a big night.

Those who like the courtyard are in luck, this thing is huge, and the atmosphere sitting in different locations will offer you a different experience.

From roughly 10:30pm downstairs on the outside dance floor (The Sub Bar) you'll hear the beats pumping out from the DJ playing typical House beats, with the odd Ministry of Sound event thrown in for good measure. If you want to get in the thick of things entry fee is 10 hard earnt dollars and if you get down there early enough you can grab one of the four intimate booths that can fit quiet a large group in, and if you never been to the fiddler before I suggest you part ways with your cash and experience the true fiddler at its best, going down stairs to the outside dance floor is where my mates and I grew up, all I can ask is for you not to judge me though, if the house music is not for you the music upstairs next to The Fiddler bar caters more for the RnB fans.

The dining experience is fancy, overpriced typical pub food, with two separate dining areas The Royal Oak Grill and The Fiddler Bar offers a range of products at an inflated price if you can hold out for the Fiddler Burger or kebab after your been ejected or voluntarily walked out I suggest you do so, it's the only way to finish a night out isn't it.

The Mean Fiddler offers several private or open function areas to cater for your needs big or small from a family birthday to a wedding reception, each to their own really. The place simply put is huge it's like a pub crawl within the one hotel, there's a few other smaller bars in the place you'll find yourself at during the night, the music is pumping, the crowd well I'd rather you make up your own mind but it won't take long for that to happen, the place can become a sweatbox inside by the end of the night if you haven't ventured outside you'll know about it and phone reception inside is not good, always has been, for those who lose people easily, the night will soon become a blur but as we did we found our way back there weekend after weekend.

Enjoy The Mean Fiddler Experience.

Business and Industry in Portsmouth

Portsmouth is known as one of the major industrial centres in the UK. In the times of Henry VIII it became the first place in the world to have a 'dry dock' built, following this it became one of the Royal Ports and its tradition of repairing and building ships for the Royal Navy began.

Vosper-Thorneycroft (VT) is the major ship-builder still located in Portsmouth. It carries on the long tradition of naval ship building and repairs that dates back to Tudor times in the city. Currently building the Royal navy's new Type 45 destroyers, it has also recently won a contract to build smaller vessels for the Royal Oman Navy. In 2003 Rolls Royce acquired the marine electrical systems side of Vosper-Thorneycroft's business. Like VT, Rolls Royce has several manufacturing sites across the UK working on military projects. Its Portsmouth factory at Cosham employs about 120 people working on a range of electrical products from propulsion units to control systems. Mclaren Composites is a company that occupies a niche between the old manufacturing industries and the newer 'hi-tech' ones. Originally established in 1989 as Mclaren Cars by the former racing driver Ron Dennis, the company became the first to manufacture a F1 racing car with a composite body. Mclaren composites relocated from Guilford in Surrey to Portsmouth in 2003. Apart from making some of the best racing car bodies in the world, Mclaren Composites also work with high volume car manufacturers, such as Mercedes-Benz, producing Carbon fibre bodies for the SLR range of vehicles. The Pall Corporation has its UK offices in Portsmouth at Europa House on Havant Street in the city centre. Pall Corporation is one of the worlds leading companies in filtration and purification systems and works primarily on related technologies for the pharmaceutical industry.

To give it its full name, Her Majesties Naval Base Portsmouth is undoubtedly the single largest employer in the city. It employs several thousands of people working on the ships that have their home port in Portsmouth. Two thirds of the Royal Navy's ships are based here meaning there is an abundance of repair and logistical support work available.

Realising that it could not for ever be reliant on ship-building or heavy industry, Portsmouth has been successful in attracting some 'hi-tech' and 'blue chip' companies. One such company is EADS-Astrium; a leading space telecommunications company which has premises in Portsmouth. The company specialises in constructing satellites that aid military navigation and communications. The UK Ministry of Defence uses their SKYNET 4 & 5 systems. IBM has for many years used Portsmouth as one of its major locations within the UK. With a location at North Harbour visible from the M27 motorway the Portsmouth offices of IBM are their Head Offices in the UK. IBM - International Business Machines, was established as a company in its own right in 1911 in the USA, its Portsmouth office employs several hundred people locally and several thousands throughout the UK. For many decades now it has been one of the world leaders in developing Information & Communication Technologies. A younger 'hi-tech'/computer company based in Portsmouth is Climax who produce cross-platform games for the computer industry. Established in 1988 they are the company behind the 'computer' version of the television game - 'Who wants to be a millionaire'. Actually involved in the manufacture of computers is NovaTech who have their Head Office and manufacturing base in Portsmouth. They are based in the Castle Trading Estate at Portchester, where they both build and sell computers. Established in 1987 they originally sold through 'mail-order', but are now one of the larger UK makers and sellers of low-cost desktop and laptop computers.

Portsmouth is a major harbour for all manner of sailing vessels, Ferries sail from Portsmouth to Santander in Spain, St Malo & Cherbourg in Brittany, Caen in Normandy, the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands. The two main ferry companies operating out of Portsmouth are P&O and Brittany Ferries, both of which are important employers in the city. Brittany Ferries was originally a freight carrier between Roscoff in Brittany and Portsmouth delivering artichokes and cauliflowers to Britain. Whilst still involved in the freight business carrying nearly 200,000 lorries a year, it is now responsible for over 2.5 million passenger journeys a year in some three quarters of a million cars. Brittany Ferries is still owned by the co-operative of French farmers that started the company in 1972. With a history dating back to the early 19th century, P&O are one of the best known British shipping companies. One of the ports they operate out of is Portsmouth with ferries sailing to Bilbao in northern Spain.

With office locations all over the UK, the Portsmouth offices of the Zurich Insurance Financial Services company employs over 100 people and is the regional office for business in Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset and Hampshire.

Holidays to Kenya - Things to See and Do Around Watamu

Holidays to Kenya seem to have one main thing people think off - beaches. There is however so much more to see and do than sun yourself in the tropical sun. For those with a little adventure the seemingly quiet resort of Watamu has plenty to keep even the most adventurous happy.

Arabuko-Sokoke Forest National Park

The Arabuko-Sokoke Forest is the largest indigenous forest in Eastern Africa. The forest has more than 400 square kilometres to explore either on foot or by car. The forest is also home the Sykes monkeys and the Yellow Baboons; as well as two rare species: the Ader's Duiker (a tiny, shy antelope); and the Golden-Rumped Elephant Shrew, a creature that resembles a giant mouse. The forest also hosts huge frog populations during wet years. A glorious array of butterflies and rare birds makes this forest a pick and mix of all things to keep you happy.

When visiting the Forest first visit the Forest Visitor Centre which provides maps and a wealth of information needed to make your visit enjoyable. Guides are also available from the visitor centre, which can be used for normal tours, night walks and bird walks. There are also a few driving routes that are suitable for bikes and 4WD vehicles.

Gedi Ruins

This thirteenth to seventeenth century Swahili town remained surprisingly secretive despite the large population centres around Malindi, thanks largely to the forest that engulfs it. Now reclaimed by the forest itself, the Baobabs and roots invade the ruins. It has its fair share of ghost stories and the locals are uneasy about visiting the place. A museum provides evidence of international trade, yet even this element of the towns past remains puzzling, as does its absence from historical literature. Nevertheless, if you are looking for a spine tingling experience Gedi is the place to go. If you are into the nature side of things, spend time to take in the natural beauty surrounding the ruins. If you look hard enough you may see the Golden-Rumped Elephant Shrew. You may also come across monkeys, bush babies, tiny antelope and if you are unlucky, a mystical sheep-like creature that follows you like a shadow!

Watamu and the Marine Nature Reserve.

Watamu is the place to be if you are into diving and other sea based activities. The Marine Park stretches along the Watamu coast giving prime snorkelling and diving territory. The Reef that straddles the coastline is in pristine condition and the water is clear. Whale sharks are regular visitors, as well as shoals of Coral Fish. Take a boat trip to the Coral Gardens, giant pillars of coral where spectacular sea life call their home. There are also glass bottom boat trips so everybody can enjoy this magical world. Snorkelling equipment is also provided on the boats, but it is usually best to bring your own.

The Crowded Tour

The Grand Canyon is a famous scenic spot in United States. And its good reputation attracts tourists all over the world to visit it. So there are absolutely many people in the golden tourism season. I unfortunately had a crowded tour when I visited the Grand Canyon South Rim. October is the best time to visit places of interest, so I went to visit the canyon. When I saw the breathtaking scenery, I think everything is worthwhile.

I flew into Las Vegas at first, and I managed to get a discount ticket which saved me much money. I stayed in an ordinary lodge, but I recommended its pancakes. I ate them at my breakfast, and they were so delicious that I ate them up and asked for more. And then I continued my tour to the South Rim. I rent a car to drive into the park. The desert gradually changed into a forest area, and then the Grand Canyon suddenly appeared in front of my eyes. What a great view! It cost me $25.00 to enter the park. And in this natural and breathtaking park, I saw some lovely animals, including several squirrels, some deer and an elk strolling in the woods.

The South Rim was jam-packed with more tourists that I had never encountered in other tourism places. Despite heavy traffic, I still enjoyed a happy trip. The canyon has awesome formations and rock walls. And they keep on changing different colors at different time in the day. The huge rock walls looked like spectacular paintings, but they are wonder works of nature. I cannot help taking pictures, and I wanted to share the beautiful scenery with my family and friends. The view from the rim is well worth the price of admission.

The amazing scenery in the canyon will absolutely take your breath away. I have to admit that any great building cannot compare with the wonder of nature, and nature has great power and fantastic beauty. Next time, I will come here with my family or my friends, and we will share the beautiful scenery together.

Tips on Hangzhou Bicycle Touring

The travelers who are accustomed to the free tour know that visiting a tourist destination by foot is definitely enjoyable, while they will feel a little tired after a long time journey.

If we want to measure the city view, the first idea is to rent a bike, but not to take a taxi. Camparing with cars, the bikes could take us more close to the local custom and natural scenery, and the bikes are much faster than walking, so it could save more energy.

The city Hangzhou is famous for the West Lake, beautiful scenery and Longjing Tea. People coming to Hangzhou all want to enjoy the landscape around West Lake, totally relax among the lakes and mountains and also get a close touch with the famous Longjing Tea. However, if you want to visit these destinations, maybe it will cost much time and energy. I still remember that I once saw three persons including s a girl wearing high heels when I was walking around West Lake. They were planning to walk around the West Lake, while just a few minutes, they all took a tourist cable car.

In fact, Hangzhou has introduced bicycle rental service for a long time. The rental service steps are covering:
- Finish the necessary procedures: pay 300 yuan for a bicycle (200 for deposit, and 100 for prepaid money)
- Select a satisfied bicycle, usually they are prepare relatively small ones
- Get the rental bicycle locked when you are not to return it
- Get the rental bicycle back to the parking site

New Year Breaks in Ireland - The Perfect Place Whatever You Are After

New Year will be on us soon enough - and whether you want to see 2011 in with a bang or a gentle pop you need to start planning now. There's two types of New Year reveller. The party animal and the relaxed reveller. Whichever you are you'll find Ireland a fantastic place at New Year and there is nothing like the Irish craic to help you see in 2011.

Dublin really comes alive especially after dark, so just strolling around the city's streets at night is an attraction in itself. Party animals head off to Temple Bar, Dublin's vibrant cultural quarter or for kids of all ages why not book tickets to a traditional pantomime like Aladdin at the Gaiety Theatre. Carry on the tradition and ring in the New Year to the sound of the Christchurch Bells which will be heard ringing throughout the entire city at midnight.

For the relaxed revellers amongst us there's plenty of other things to see and do. For some seasonal fun why not try Galway Bay on Ice. Nimmo's Pier in the Claddagh area is transformed into a Winter wonderland where the whole family can try out their ice skating skills. For the braver amongst you sample the exhilaration of the RNLI New Years Day swim at Dugort Silver Strand. If you don't mind the cold take the plunge or have just as much fun and join the crowds on the shoreline and cheer on the swimmers.

Join the huge New Years eve street party at Dingle. The fun starts with a spectacular fireworks display on Dingle Bay at 10pm with locals and visitors gathering at The Pier to watch the wonderful spectacle and continues with a trip around the streets of Dingle led by the Dingle Fife and Drum Band. At midnight about 2,000 people gather at The Bridge for the New Year countdown.

If you crave quieter New Year celebrations Ireland is the perfect place. Choose to take a self catering holiday cottage and you can magic yourself away to some stunning locations, hideaway in front of warm peat fires and toast the New Year in with the locals at one of many traditional Irish pubs. Take a look at Cork, Kerry, Mayo, Donegal and Wexford to find your New Year retreat.

So if you want to party the night away or escape the boozy crowds and inflated prices try the experience of an Irish New Year. Getting there is easy. Ferry prices are often cheaper than at high season and if you book in advance you can take advantage of low air fares.

Transport in and Around Portsmouth

The historical importance of Portsmouth as a naval base has ensured that it has excellent road links to and from London. Unfortunately the same cannot be said if you're travelling to or from Portsmouth to elsewhere in the UK. There are no direct motorway routes servicing the north or west of the UK, which given the volume of traffic that uses Portsmouth to cross the Channel is quite surprising.

Getting to and from Portsmouth:

By road from London the journey to Portsmouth is quite fast and straightforward with two main options. The first is to pick up the A3 from the M25, which goes directly to Portsmouth. Alternatively you could use the M3, again off the M25, which goes to Southampton, then at the M3 junction with the M27 head east to Portsmouth. Either way the journey is about 80 miles and, from the south west of London, will typically take 1 ? hours. If you are heading for Portsmouth from the north east it's quite sensible to stay on the M1 or A1 and use the A3 or N3 off the M25. However, if journeying to Portsmouth from the Northwest or west of England then I'm afraid you'll have a tedious journey on 'A' class roads once you've left the M5 or M4.

Portsmouth has two main railway stations; Portsmouth & Southsea which is the city centre station on Commercial Road and Portsmouth Harbour which, as the name implies, takes passengers and freight all the way to the harbour for the ferry terminals and naval base. Both stations have regular services into and out of London Victoria and London Waterloo. The journey time to Waterloo being only 1? hours makes Portsmouth a viable dormitory town for London commuters. The regularity of the train service to London puts the frequency of many local bus services to shame - there's one every ten minutes! The route into London Waterloo is a direct one and is operated by South West Trains. The train service into Victoria is also operated by South West Trains, but invariably requires a change of trains at Clapham Junction. Heading north or west by train from Portsmouth, Virgin and First Great Western are the main train operators. The main local train service provider is Southeastern Railways.

Portsmouth Airport closed down in the early 1970s, so if you want to fly into Portsmouth the nearest you can get to it is Southampton. Then you'll have to journey by car or bus down the M27. Southampton Airport is a small one that only operates services within the UK and to some European cities.

The two main coach operators for Portsmouth are National Express and Stagecoach. Stagecoach operate their 'Coastline' services to the east and west of Portsmouth, whilst both operate many other routes to and from Plymouth, including the fast and lucrative one to London Victoria Coach station, with an hourly service that can take as little as 2 hours.

You could arrive in Portsmouth, or indeed depart to, a number of places by ferry. The current main routes are: Jersey and Guernsey by Condor Ferries, Bilbao in Spain with P&O ferries and Brittany Ferries who operate services between Portsmouth and St Malo, Caen and Cherbourg in France. NB. Condor Ferries also operate a service between Portsmouth and Cherbourg. There have been ferries between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight since 1796. Whitlink Isle of Wight Ferries have been operating that route for over 160 years and offer services to and from Ryde or Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight. The 350,000 passengers that use Portsmouth to cross the Channel every year is absolutely dwarfed by the 5,500,000 passengers that travel to and from the Isle of Wight every year. Whitlink Isle of Wight Ferries has a 'turn-over' in excess of ?50 million per annum. For more than 40 years now, Hovertravel have been providing an unsurprising Hovercraft service between Portsmouth-Southsea and Ryde on the Isle of Wight. The Hovercraft service is for foot passengers and bicycles only. All routes to the different Portsmouth ferry terminals are well signposted on the approach roads and motorways as well as in the city itself.

Travel in and around Portsmouth:

Travel around Portsmouth is usually easy and free-flowing. To cope with the volume of traffic using the ferry ports, the city has invested well in constructing a road system to meet the demands made of it.

The main local bus company is the First Hampshire & Dorset which runs regular services to and from the city centre to all the tourist attractions and the ferry ports. Portsmouth has a well integrated public transport system between the ferry ports, railway and coach stations as well as the main shopping areas, serving both the local population and its many visitors. To the north of the city are Hilsea and Cosham railway stations and to the east there is Fratton station. Several of the local train operators offer commuter services to and from these stations.

Although less than a mile away in a straight line, a journey from Portsmouth to Gosport could take over 30 minutes as you have to drive all the way around Portsmouth Harbour, about 22km (16 miles) to get there. The first record of a ferry between Portsmouth and Gosport is 1603; the current Gosport Ferry has been working between that route for over 125 years now. These are foot passenger and bike ferries only, but at a cost of only a couple of pounds and a journey time of 7? minutes, it's the ideal way to see Gosport.

Grand Canyon: 13 Fun Things to Know Before You Go

In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson brought the Grand Canyon into the national park system. Since then, the canyon has become a huge hit with travelers around the world. If you are one of the five million people who will visit the Park this year, here are some fun facts that will enhance your experience:

1. Grand Canyon National Park encompasses more than 1,900 square miles or more than 1.2 million acres.

2. The canyon's average width is 10 miles. The narrowest point is in Marble Canyon, where it is 600 feet wide. The maximum width is 18 miles, which is found at several different points.

3. The canyon averages about one mile in depth. Imperial Point, located at the North Rim, is the highest point and measures 8,803 feet high. Navajo Point is the South Rim's highest point, coming in at 7,498 feet. By contrast, the lowest point is Phantom Ranch, which rests at the bottom, elevation 2,400 feet.

4. The canyon's volume is estimated to be nearly 5.5 trillion cubic yards

5. The greatest depth is a bit more than a mile below its rim

6. The Colorado River is 1,450 total miles long of which 277 miles run the canyon from Lees Ferry to the Grand Wash Cliffs (located near Lake Mead in Nevada)

7. The average width of the Colorado River in the canyon is 300 feet; its narrowest point is 76 feet. The river averages 40 feet in depth, with it's greatest depth plunging to 85 feet.

8. The National Park is packed with biodiversity. There are 91 species of mammals, 373 species of birds, 57 species of reptiles and amphibians, 17 species of fish, and more than 1,700 species of plants.

9. Nearly 8,500 invertebrates - animals that don't have an internal skeleton (e.g. insects, worms, spiders) - call the canyon home.

10. There's plenty of exploration to be done. Grand Canyon National Park lists 4,800 archeological sites of interest within its boundaries...and that's with ONLY 3% of the total Park surveyed!

11. The National Park is home to nine buildings that are recognized as National Historic Landmarks. Grand Canyon village, the hub of activity at the Park's South Rim, is comprised of 257 properties, all of which make up a National Historic Landmark District.

12. The Grand Canyon gets five million visitors a year. Of that number, 1.5 million come by car, 30,000 by tour buses, nearly 240,000 via the Grand Canyon Railway, and up to 750,000 by fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.

13. In the early 1900's, Grand Canyon visitors would stay and average of two to three weeks. Fast-forward to today and that visit is down to between two to three hours.

Planning to visit the canyon? You have three places from which to choose: South Rim, West Rim, and North Rim. Here are specifics:

South Rim

Located in northern Arizona just west of Flagstaff, AZ, this is the rim you go to for views and trails. It's a 4-hour drive from Phoenix and a 2-hour drive from Sedona, AZ. If you are coming over from Las Vegas, it's a 5.5-hour drive (personally, I recommend you take the 45-minute flight).

West Rim

This rim is 120 miles due east of Las Vegas. Its a 2.5-hour ride by bus, a 45-minute flight by helicopter, and a 25-minute flight by airplane. This rim is home to the Grand Canyon Skywalk, the glass bridge that extends 70 feet past the edge and suspends you 4,000 feet above the Colorado River. It's also the only place in the canyon where you can hop a helicopter and fly to the bottom.

North Rim

There are no direct flights from Las Vegas or Phoenix to the North Rim. Instead, it's a 5-hour drive from Grand Canyon Village in the South Rim. This is the most isolated part of the Grand Canyon. Roads to it are closed from November to March.

The Grand Canyon deserves its place among the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Hopefully, these quick facts put it into perspective for you. Most importantly, I hope they motivate you to plan a trip to the National Park and see it in person. Being there is a life-changing event. Make sure it gets on your "bucket list."

Gastronomy and Barcelona Hotels

Food from Spain is made mostly from a noticeable custom of crisp, seasonal, hearty groceries, turned into irresistible dishes by the local people. The native Mediterranean basics of pulses, oil, garlic, and vegetables are found both in the most elegant hotels and the roadside stalls. Spain's extensive history with many cultural influences has led to an array of unique cuisines with literally thousands of recipes and flavours.

The level headed mental attitude to eating in Barcelona has bestowed it a place at the cutting edge of European dining, and makes for many guilt-free meals. Thriftiness is heavy on the agenda here, but meals are made in a way that heightens instead of forfeits quality. Dishes in Catalonia are ingredient-led, and recipes are uncomplicated but impressive. Delicate flavour and texture combinations have led to the growth of "bistronomic" restaurants - small eating houses with superior food. These exclusively can comprise a fantastic tour.

From quick wine trips to holiday extravaganzas costing over one thousand pounds, these directed expeditions are a keen way to absorb the heart and soul of the area in a succinct manner. In the last decade, the Catalonia part of Spain has undergone a culinary revolution and is nowadays the terminus of choice for those willing to see vanguard molecular culinary arts or learn how to couple these brilliant ingredients with wine. Scarcely outside of Barcelona is the beautiful Penedes region with its celebrated Cava vineries and a number of eminent still white wines and red wines made in that and additional parts of Catalonia. Dozens of organised gastronomical tours can be arranged from a number of Barcelona hotels. Additionally, there are a lot of chances to take a cookery class whilst in Barcelona.

To the opposite extreme, Spain is additionally known for its adventurous cookery. Barcelona hotels are home to "laboratories" such as El Billi Taller, where chef Ferran Adria invents original, alchemical dishes. When a few of the country's most dynamic chefs opened intimate spaces at local hotels, they had to review their cooking so as to strike the balance between delighting crowds and giving the vanguard-obsessed critics something to enjoy. Some other hotels provide modest neoclassical cooking as the taste of the moment, with new chefs perfecting their skills before advancing to more contemporary efforts. Food here is a fine art, and the Barcelona gastronomical sensation draws as many people annually as several of the world's public art galleries.

Antwerp - A City That Celebrates And Proudly Displays Its Heritage

Antwerp is a large city in Belgium that has many characteristic qualities: the kind, helpful people, the booming diamond trade, the signature delicious food, and low-key sort of lifestyle. The new and old facets of Belgian culture come together and make a very special type of place. If you've been on the lookout for a vacation destination that's low-stress and easy-going, look into Antwerp. Just don't forget your passport. US passport services are available online to help you get started.

Services regarding passports have recently made a switch to the internet. These easy-to-use sites handle things like passport applications and rush passport renewal. The steps are easy: fill out an application, select a delivery date, and then you can continue with your planning. This means significantly less planning stress.

The historical aspect of Antwerp is tremendous, and you'll definitely never be without something to do. Rubenshuis, The Rubens House, is the historical home of the artistic master. The walls are still decorated with a lot of his art. Het Steen - "The Stone" - is an ancient castle that was constructed around 1220-1225, making it Belgium's oldest building. Now it houses a small naval museum. Also, at the foot of this building is the start of the scenic boardwalk, Wandelterrassen. Boerentoren, the Farmer's Tower is regarded as Europe's first skyscraper. On the twenty-fifth floor of this tower is an observation deck where you can get an awesome birds' eye view of Antwerp.

In the middle of the historical district of Antwerp, you can find City Hall and Old Market Square. City Hall is a very special building with it's unique mixture of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, a mixture found almost exclusively in this building. Around the Square are Medieval houses that look like something straight out of a story book - it really is enough to make you feel like you've stepped back in time. In 1351, The Cathedral of our Lady was built. Standing more than four hundred feet tall, it is one of the largest Gothic Cathedrals in North Europe.

Any historical town is perfect for ghost hunting, so if you're the type that craves a little bit of the supernatural, be sure to book a tour or go exploring on your own if you can. Antwerp is full of surprises - like the little hidden street Vlaeykensgang, a street that hides behind a pair of big Medieval doors. Go out and see if you can discover it.

The Port of Antwerp is another interesting place to visit. It is the biggest port in Europe, and one of the biggest in the world. Lots of Belgian history and culture awaits you at the Port, and there are tours available to give you an in-depth look at the significance of this mighty trading hub.

This is just a small fraction of the stuff you can see and do in Antwerp. One of the benefits of an Antwerp vacation is the cost; there is so much to do that costs little to no money. For example, taking a bike ride around the city is one of the best ways to explore, and Antwerp is one of the most bike-friendly cities around. Just be sure to remember your passports, and don't forget about online US passport services. These sites offer rush passport renewal among other things, so get ready to start your adventure!

Like this, all cell or mobile phones, MP3 players, game consoles and such can be charged and used accordingly throughout the trip. A portable GPS is always an excellent buddy to have with you at all times, especially on a long distance drive. It can cut your trip by avoiding any mistakes that will cause you to lose time. Plus, you will never get lost with it.

A cooler full of snacks and other food will also shorten the drive. You won't have to make that many stops this way. And, you will cut down on the cost of the trip by packing the essentials. If you like coffee, brew some of your own and put it in a thermos. Remember to bring safe traveling mugs and you're set.

Aside from the electronics, there are other important things to remember to bring with you on the drive. For instance, some pillows for each passenger to rest his or her head. Blankets are always a welcomed accessory for long distance drives as well.

Cockatoo Club (The Beat) - Brisbane, Australia - Review

The Beat Mega Club houses five rooms each with their own distinct vibe. Perched at the crest of this Brisbane institution, the Cockatoo Club is definitely one of Brisbane's most fun-filled and fanciful clubbing nights. It is as much as an icon in Brisbane's gay community as Vegemite is of Australia. The music is quite commercial compared to the hard beats in the some of the other rooms. You will hear loads of gay anthems re-mixed into a progressive style. Think endless dance tracks of ballads and divas and you are on the right track. Through the sea of fluorescent-mesh singlets you may notice a few ravers taking a break from the happy-hard beats that the downstairs main room offers. You should have a laugh at a few of them who dare to stomp to Kylie or Madonna in their fat pants. If you are female and don't mind drag queens sporting better pins than you then this is the place to be.

There are regular drag queen performances, games, and promotions on each night of the week. Sign up to become a member for monthly member's nights with free drinks and give-aways. Jelly wrestling each Wednesday night should help ease your way through hump day quite nicely. Sunday Funday sees a line-up of regulars stretching along Brunswick Street from five pm onwards for free champers and a free BBQ on the deck. This is the club that just doesn't stop giving!

The Cockatoo Club is not pretentious so leave your attitude at the door, it's a great place where the regulars are friendly and it is definitely a great night for young, old, gay or straight. Open 8pm-5am all days except Sunday, which opens from 5pm. Entry to this nightclub is usually around $10 depending on the day and time you arrive.

Visit Shetland And Be Amazed

At first glance there may not seem to be much reason to visit Shetland. The Shetland islands lie 60 degree of latitude north where summer days are cool at best, and often windy and rainy too. Transport links to the islands have definitely improved over the years, but it is still a long journey. Why then should anyone visit Shetland? Ah, but those who do are amazed at the diversity and beauty of place. There's a special magic that pervades these northern isles, and it brushes off on the visitor. Those who make the effort to see Shetland nearly always come back. There's so much to discover that a lifetime is rarely enough.

You can reach Shetland by an overnight ferry from Aberdeen in the north of Scotland, or you can take one of the several Shetland flights that operate every day from either Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness, and from other airports too. The ferry from Aberdeen allows you to take a car or caravan, which may be attractive to anyone thinking of touring around the isles for a week or two.

There are 15 inhabited islands in the group, and around another 85 or so uninhabited islands, some of them no more than large rocks in the sea with a few tufts of grass clinging tenaciously on top. The inhabited islands are all connected, either by an inter-island ferry service, or by bridge, and some of them also have regular flight connections too. Only Burra Isle, Trondra and Muckle Roe are connected by bridge as they are close enough to Mainland, the largest island, to make it viable. Most of the other islands have a regular ferry service.

The islands offer an exceptional opportunity to enjoy coastal scenery. Nowhere are you more than three miles from the sea in this unique archipelago. Nature and wildlife and untouched landscapes surrounds you at all times with the bird watching opportunities especially good. And of course, if you hope to see Shetland ponies in the wild in their natural environment, this is definitely the place to be.

Shetland bed and breakfast is easy to find, as well as high quality hotels. There are also plenty of self-catering accommodation to be booked. The choice is yours. And while it's wise to bring some warm clothes when you visit Shetland, even in summer, just in case, don't expect it to be much colder than farther south. Visitors are usually surprised at just how mild it is so far north.

Beach Honeymoons in Africa

Looking for a beach honeymoon somewhere a little bit different? Why not try Africa? You'll get a fantastic opportunity to combine your honeymoon with a safari if you wish, or you can just focus on the beaches and enjoy a less crowded experience. There are a number of benefits to honeymooning on the African continent itself rather than the nearby Indian Ocean islands of Mauritius, the Maldives, and the Seychelles. Here are the key advantages we would suggest:

1. Fewer people. The Indian Ocean is a very popular place for honeymooners and holidayers alike. In the up season, the resorts, restaurants, and activities will be crowded and teeming with people unless you're willing to pay a fortune for a villa of your own. Obviously, that's fine then; but fewer people choose to visit the African coast for their beach honeymoon without any real reason why. After all, the sand is equally white and the ocean is just as beautiful from the African side as it is from the islands.

2. Amazing resorts. Yes, there are incredible luxury resorts for your honeymoon all over the coasts of Africa. For example, Azura in Mozambique is an incredible destination for your honeymoon; it's Mozambique's first eco-resort and virtually guaranteed to provide you with all the pampering, luxury, and privacy you could ask for when going on your honeymoon. With a world class spa, expansive villas, and private plunge or infinity pools, it's hard to fault Azura for your honeymoon. Fundu Lagoon on Pemba Island, just off the coast of Zanzibar and only accessible by boat, is another incredible option for a week or two of luxury. Each room and suite is thatched with an incredible view of the Indian Ocean, and you'll be able to go swimming and diving to your heart's content.

3. Exciting honeymoon combinations. Having your honeymoon in Africa means that you're not limited by your location. There is simply so much going on in Africa that you might even be overwhelmed with choices. The obvious choice is a safari. If you're going to be in the perfect location for one, why not take advantage of that proximity? You might split your time between different beaches with a quick, three day safari, or take a train ride through South Africa, stopping for game drives along the way. You might also choose to spend some time golfing or relaxing in the spa - there are even great hiking trails through the areas around the cost. All the possibilities are open to you, allowing you to truly make your honeymoon your own.

An African honeymoon is full of endless opportunities. It's an amazing destination for any honeymooner - or holidayer, for that matter - and can truly make your dreams come true. The continent is gorgeous and diverse, with so much to see and do, so why waste your time anywhere else?

Philippines Cost Of Living: Living Like A King For $1,000

Thankfully, there are still places in the world where anyone can live for under $1,000 and one of these places is the Philippines. So, keeping in mind the Philippines cost of living, how far will your $1,000 go?

1. The $300 rent

It is possible to rent a nice apartment or a house for just $300 a month in urban cities like Cebu and Davao, excluding furnishings. You can rent a fully-furnished apartment if you're willing to pay for a bit more.

2. The $200 food budget

If you're living alone or with your Filipina wife, it is possible to have a food budget of $200 per month. Of course, this doesn't cover the cost of dining at a Hilton hotel (yes, there are Hilton hotels in the Philippines).

3. The $12 hospital visit

Forget the public hospitals, going to reputable private hospital in places like Cebu will cost you no more than $12 in doctor's fees. If you are on medication, there are chain store pharmacies that sell prescription medicine from the United States and other countries.

Summing it all, the cost of living in the Philippines is a lot lower than in other countries in Asia. The good thing about it is that the Philippine government has a special program for foreign retirees called the Special Resident Retirees Visa (SRRV).

Also, if you're married to a Filipina woman, you can apply for a 13A Non-Quota immigrant visa or 13B Quota immigrant visa if you're single and simply just want to live in the Philippines.

Australia's Best Bars - Fat Louie's, Brisbane - Review

Fat Louie's is a pool hall that boasts local grungy/heavy metal acts and private karaoke rooms. It is hidden up three flights of stairs on Albert Street in Brisbane City and is not somewhere you would stumble across upon a drunken escapade. During the week local corporate clientele wind down over a few stubbies and games of snooker and on weekends the crowd is mostly comprised of students who look like they have raided their grandparent's closets. Who said grunge was dead?

Having lived in Brisbane for over a decade I had heard of Fat Louie's but have never been for the most obvious reason that I am an absolutely hopeless snooker player. Recently I organised a group of girlfriends to go and check out one of their private karaoke rooms and I must report our experience was quite fun. The Karaoke rooms have groovy couches and disco lights to get you in the mood, the technology isn't that new but the wide track selection and cheap room hire prices are a huge draw card. We hired the room for two hours which was definitely long enough to warm up our vocal chords and time absolutely flew.

My hot tip is make sure you order a few drinks at the bar at any given time especially if there is a band on, otherwise you may spend your entire night waiting to be served.

Live local bands play both Friday and Saturday nights so it's super busy and you may experience lengthy wait times for snooker tables.

The decor and vibe of Fat Louie's is no frills so if you are looking to brush shoulders with Brisbane's cool crowd keep looking! However, if you want to sink a few eight balls and listen to some local acts or hire your very own karaoke room then look no further.

USA Road Trips - Desert Hot Springs

If you want to get away from the crowds and expense of Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs is the place to go. About 5 miles from Palm Springs, this small city is growing and improving every year.

In Desert Hot springs you will find many accommodations for any budget, and best of all, just about every hotel, motel and resort has natural hot springs & Spas for you to enjoy and soak in.This town is built above one of the worlds best natural hot water aquifers. The water is clean, the air is clean and the scenery of the mountains are spectacular.

Hot mineral water enthusiasts come from all over the word to soak in the natural hot springs and spas which is available in almost every hotel, motel & spa.

Because of it's higher elevation it is usually 5-10 degrees cooler than on the valley floor in cities like Palm Springs.

It's only about 120 from Los Angeles and besides the attractions in Palm Springs and the other desert cities nearby. (The whole valley is called the Coachella Valley which includes Palm Springs, Indian Wells, Palm Desert, Indio, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, La Quinta, Thousand Palms and maybe a few more.)

If you enjoy the outdoors there is plenty of golf courses, Desert Hot Springs is located right next to Joshua Tree State Park which should not be missed and the surrounding mountains have many quaint towns in the cooler elevations such as Idyllwild, Pioneer Town and Mount San Jacinto State Park which is accessible by car or the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway which is another must do activity.

Also is you need to cool off and need an activity for the kids, there is a great water park just a few miles away.If you prefer to stay indoors when it gets too hot the many casinos in the area is the place to go.There is always special deals and almost all of the larger casinos have world class entertainment.

Getting to Desert Hot Springs is easy. From Los Angeles just take Interstate 10 to the Desert Hot Springs exit, which also may be signed as Gene Autry Trail. From the San Diego area just take interstate 15 to Interstate 10 and then go east. From Phoenix is a straight drive west on Interstate 10, a great scenic desert drive. The main exit and main drag is Palm Drive. Do not get it confused with Date Palm Drive which is one exit over.

Even though most days are sunny and moderate (330 days of sunshine a year), be prepared for an occasional cold snap.

Many locals will just abbreviate the city name to DHS. And many visitors will by winter homes in the area especially Canadians as they visit in droves during the winter months. At the time of this article, homes in DHS are amongst the lowest price in the nation. You can buy a beautiful home in this area for under 100,000

So if you love warm weather, plenty to do inside and outside, without the expensive hotel crowds and traffic of Palm Springs, DHS is the place to go and a great USA Road Trip.

Salzburg, The Music Capital Of The Alps

Salzburg is a city of music and light, a place of beautiful cathedrals and majestic fortresses. Spend a few days there to experience all the fascination this city can trigger in you.

To give yourself the full picture, if living there for a while isn't an option, at least visit Salzburg two times. Once in the summer when the streets are echoing the music by which this location is best know for. The city has always had an artistic, playful side which made it ideal to host drama and musical festivals since the Middle Ages. After the mystery plays and Baroque carnivals, the Salzburger Festspiele was founded at the end of the 19th century, as a tribute to Salzburg's illustrious composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Since then a lot of chords have been sacrificed to music, and the city gave the world many other famous musicians, but the Salzburg Festival is more popular than ever. If you consider yourself a fan of classical music or opera, you have to spend a magnificent July evening on the spacious Domplaz, enjoying the colourful costumes and perfect harmonies of Jedermann, played annually at the festival since 1920.

But if you think that there is more to Salzburg than music, you are definitely right. After having seen the exquisite buildings of the Altstadt (the central old town), visit the summer palace Schloss Hellbrunn, and get astonished by the pleasure ground of trick fountains, gardens, ponds, artificial grottoes, sculptures and statues, but also a spectacular view on the city.

Nevertheless, don't let the architectural heritage overwhelm you, and take a break in the M?llner Br?u Brewery for a quick bite and (arguably) Austria's best beer. Sit under the shades of chestnut trees, and enjoy your beverage in a traditional stein mug poured from a historical barrel and made by the former Augustinerkloster abbey.

If you travel to Salzburg in winter, you can have a totally different experience. The city would be lightened up and decorated for Christmas, and the open-air markets could warm you up with a glass of mould wine and some carols. Don't miss the Christmas fair at the Cathedral or Residenzplatz, and feel the magic of the holidays at the Hellbrunner Adventzauber. These places not only provide you with beautiful souvenirs and presents, but also give you a veritable Christmas atmosphere and wonderful Advent concerts. You can also have a culinary treat right from the fire, freshly baked and so yummy.

So, as the holidays are getting closer and closer with each shortened day, treat the family, visit Salzburg, and surprise yourself with a wonderful Christmas holiday at the foot of the Alps in a legendary city. If you re wondering where else is magical to visit, we'll tell you at the book a hotel website, where it's not just about the hotels, but also the beautiful cities they reside in. We hope to see you there soon.
