The Best Summer Holidays Are In New Zealand

The summer holidays in New Zealand include celebrating Christmas, New Year's Day and of course the beaches. The New Zealand summer school holidays begin around the 20th of December through to the 31st of January, and you can expect to see hundreds of cars with trailers loaded up on Boxing Day making their way to the coastal areas.

Beach holidays in New Zealand are the ultimate Kiwi summer vacation. There are endless options given the massive stretch of coastal areas that line both the north and south islands. If you are headed north to Auckland you have a huge range of beaches including: Karekare, Piha, Bethells and Muriwai beach to choose from.

If it's a surfing holiday in New Zealand you prefer head to Taranaki, the popular Surf Highway 45 joins up some of the best surfing spots in the country including: Back Beach, Rocky Rights and the Kumara Patch which can be found in Okato (note the Kumara Patch can only be accessed by foot across farmland, so make sure you ask the farmers' permission before crossing their farms) and last, but not least Fitzroy Beach.

The beach holiday lifestyle is unbeatable, from fishing, swimming and lounging in the sun, to strolling through the streets of Whangamata for example, there is plenty to do. Located in the Coromandel Peninsula, Whangamata is a well frequented beach resort, this small town's population increases substantially over the summer months with many people attending 'Whanga Week' and the 'Summer Festival'. Whangamata Beach is never empty, with morning walkers through to night-time concerts goers, there is much to see. It is advised that you get to the beach early for a good spot, like all the popular beaches throughout New Zealand, they soon fill up with bright beach blankets, sun umbrellas, chilly-bins and the smell of suntan lotion.

A Kiwi summer holiday includes barbecues, ice-creams and jandals! You are guaranteed to find Kiwi families enjoying a barbecue on a mild summer's night at the beach. Most of the beaches in New Zealand provide public barbeque facilities, and the local shops usually have BBQ packs you can buy.

Those who wish to lap up as many of the sunshine hours as they can often head to the Bay of Plenty, Hawkes Bay and Nelson for their summer holidays, where some of the most beautiful beaches can also be found. There is something about a day at the beach, or setting up your campsite to enjoy the summer holidays in New Zealand, that can't compare with any other form of summer vacation.
